State, Department of
Armed and unarmed security guards must register with the New York State Department of State (NYSDOS).
Active-duty police officers and volunteers do not need to register. Applicants must meet education requirements, pass a background check, and provide fingerprints. Applicants must be over 18 years old, and be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States. People convicted of criminal offenses cannot register.
