Businesses that sell to consumers and distributors that sell to retailers must both accept batteries of six or more volts. If batteries are not recycled, they must be disposed of as hazardous waste. Auto parts stores and car repair shops must follow this law.
Retailers must accept, free of charge, up to two used lead batteries per month from any individual. It is illegal to dispose of these batteries in the trash. Businesses must post signs informing customers that discarding auto batteries is illegal.
