To be an attorney in New York State, you must pass the Bar Exam. You need to have completed at least some formal legal studies to take the Bar Exam.
Here are ways to meet the legal studies requirement:
- Get a Juris Doctor (JD) from a law school approved by the American Bar Association (ABA)
- Study at an ABA-approved law school and work at a law office
- Study at a non-approved law school and practice law in another place for five of the last seven years
- Study at a foreign law school that is equivalent to an ABA-approved law school in the U.S.
